Suru's Television

Dear Suru,

Moving to Bombay was sort of a milestone event in my life, however a week into the city I realized how different it is a place from the rest of the Indian cities I had stayed so far. The real estate prices were skyrocketing. To rent a decent 1BHK you most likely had to  sell a kidney or sorts. Thinking of renting a place exclusively was giving me  nightmares . To my  luck this phase didn't last long and we (me and and you) got a decent place to live. Even though we got a place to be we got zero furnitures and so came to our rescue my long lost Bhole mama. He was my mom's distant cousin whom  i never even met before relocating to Bombay. He made arrangements for me to buy a second hand television for a mere sum of 3K among other things . That TV really did us good, it took care of our in-house entertainment for about 1 and half years before giving up on us. It's right then when we decided to exchange the TV for a smaller yet functional one without shelling out a dime. This new TV was a cute old fashioned model barring a small glitch! Switching the TV on would make the volume blare at full, if u tried smothering it down the best you can achieve was a mute else it would give a competition to the very best of our dear didi's crooning.

After a few days released Amir Khan's best of the best villaneous performance in  Dhoom 3, me and you decided to give this a watch.you being your super hyper self decided to do a marathon of the previous movies. Alas our dear TV set would crack it up a notch much to our disappointment when we least expected it. Case in point at ab junior's ohh so pretentious monologues or Aamir's romantic expressions . We felt as if this piece of machinery had a wit  of its own.

After another year or so (by then I had moved to Pune and was visiting you)  again this  TV demanded my attention. I had recently met someone and was talking to him over the phone while a Hindi dubbed version of a Tamil block buster caught my attention.  It put me into a Sophie's choice of sorts. If I tried keeping the volume down I missed what the movie was offering , but if I tried to keep the volume up one level, I could barely hear my newfound  bae on the other end.  As if somewhere down the line this television set was the chaos in my mind. It was telling me not to loose myself .However insane it may sound I actually saw the bigger picture and it never let me turn my head from the new avenues life threw at me.

Most of the time in life ur friend philosopher guide can come from the most unexpected corners.
Suru much like you, your TV gave me the much needed courage as well as fore sight to take life as it comes.
Indebted as ever .

Love
D.
